Music Lessons

I offer two types of music lessons:

  1. Introduction to synthesizers and drum machines
  2. Music Production and songwriting lessons.

Synthesizer & Drum Machine

  • Learn the basics of synths and drum programming
  • Learn how to use real gear and software
  • Music Lessons can bridge into Studio Production Time when you are ready

Music Production & Songwriting

  • Book production consultant time with me.
  • Bounce ideas you’re stuck on in a collaborative environment.
  • Try out ideas with effects, bring in an unfinished song
  • Take a good loop and turn it into a great finished piece.

Who are music lessons for?

Lessons are tailored to teaching you how to use synths, drum machines, and other studio tools like effects, compressors, EQ’s, and more.

  • Total beginner interested in learning electronic music basics
  • You play other instruments and want to use drum machines or synths to perform with
  • You’re recording some music at home but want to learn when, why, and how a compressor works.

Can’t I just learn this on YouTube?

YouTube is a great resource for learning (I use it all the time!). However, there are some important differences between hanging out with someone in a studio vs watching a video.

  1. A lot of YouTube content is designed to keep you coming back to a channel so you will only learn so much because the format is literally designed to keep you engaged. Nothing wrong with that, but, there’s tons of videos that barely cover a subject let alone learn it hands-on.
  2. Real-time feedback. You’re in a room with someone who has years of music making knowledge to share in the hopes you can apply a concept to your own style of music. (Why doesn’t my ambient track sound cool with this compression tutorial I got on nu metal??)

What to Expect from Music Lessons

Learn Synth basics so you don’t have to scroll through endless Presets to find what you want.

Know how to approach any synth (and how to properly scope whether it has the features you want before buying).

Learn how to make a beat from the ground up.

Learn how to use a sampler for creating beats or sound design.

Let’s work on that cool loop you have that you know has potential but you’re not sure where to go next with it.

Learn an approach to mixing that works for you (no hacks or cheat codes or any of that cornball stuff for clicks that never actually teach you much).

Intro to Synths & Drum Machines

If you are brand new to the world of electronic music or getting started, this is for you. I will teach you the basics of synthesizers and drum machines and then we can move into song writing or more complex sound production.

  • Learn synth basics
  • Learn rhythm fundamentals
  • Learn how to program drum machines
  • Learn sequencers, clocks, MIDI, and more

The first lesson is free to book with me to see if you enjoy the lessons. After the first lesson you’ll sign up for weekly lessons billed monthly.

Who these music lessons are for?

Maybe you play guitar and want to more easily create different beats to accompany or learn how to add synths to your music without feeling like you always need to spend 2 hours going through presets. I can teach you how to create your own bass, pads, and more to take your music from stock to your singular sound.

Book Studio Time – Music Production & Songwriting

I’m your local producer consultant.

These music lessons are weekly “therapy” production sessions. Get an hour or two a week to work on songs with another person. Use that time to learn how to mix, use a compressor, experiment with effects.

Bring in your demos, we’ll listen and discuss them and then work on them. Do you get stuck making a cool loop and it never goes anywhere? Let’s turn that into a song.

I’m here to help you with your demos by teaching you studio fundamentals and how to approach song writing.

  • Learn to take a song from Loop to Finished
  • Get feedback on mixes
  • Get help trying different ideas to break out of a rut
  • Get out of your studio and work with someone else’s ears
  • Learn studio basics
  • Learn how to plan for live sets and performances

Lessons can be booked 2 ways:

  1. First hour lesson is free and after that you can do weekly hour sessions billed monthly.
  2. Book a 4-hour slot with me to have focused time.

Not local for lessons? Get my zine Synth Quest and learn at home!

Synth Quest is my handmade zine that will teach you the basics of synthesizers in a fun TTRPG style learning format.

Dungeon Synth Jam. Play music at the Shop!

Every other Tuesday we do a synth jam at the shop. One person will run the drum machine and master clock and 2-3 others can sync in and jam out.
